Jarrett -- I agree. Today, the idea of a renaissance man is impossible. I have, however, been wondering about the possibility of being good in certain specific areas, which then translates well to abilities in other areas.

For example, although I'm sure that psychology is a fine and interesting major, I doubt that, say, studying psychology with many other subjects will complement each other well.

One major that (I believe) universally complement other majors is mathematics; even if it is hard to see a direct connection (say your other major is theology), the training in formal logic and disciplined though is very beneficial. It is also said throughout academia that a bachelors in mathematics will prepare a student for almost any area of graduate studies.

For that matter, computer science would probably do the same thing, as long as emphasis were placed in the right areas.

Point being, there certainly isn't enough time to be good at everything, but can we study certain things that will make learning other things much easier? This may be an important question.

Wilkie -- Ha, I know what you mean. Mistakes can be quite... informative. They can also be a waste of time vs reading documentation, but I suspect that the mistakes you've made are specifically because of a lack of thorough documentation.

But, on that, I give you:

Deep knowledge = Breadth of knowledge + hundreds of mistakes. Thousands in my case.

I don't know either. I've acquired a great breadth of information on a lot of topics, sometimes even to the point of becoming technically competent in them. But I feel like to actually get a true, deep understanding - the kind of understanding that transcends recalling facts, when you no longer have to _think_ and it's simply second-nature - you have to keep at that one thing for a long, long time. I could tell you a lot about digital sound/music recording and production, but I cannot write a song to save my soul.

The fact is, there's just not enough time to be good at everything. Either your knowledge is broad or it's deep. You can imagine that your knowledge has a constant volume, or maybe it's a function of time. You just have to decide weather to spread that volume out real thin or to pour it into a deep pit.

yes, yes I am worried about this. It's tough to think that someone would say, "oh well I'm a republican and this person is a democrat and we just won't get along well enough at the job for me to give her a chance." while bipartisanship is hard, i don't think it should be just as hard in everyday life as it is in Washington.

and i feel the same way about my faith - someone would look at some profile and say "ohh she's just another CRAAAAZY christian. we don't like those moral people bringing down the work day." because while yes, MOST christians are absolutely ridiculous, I am not one of them. and I would hope that's inherently obvious by just meeting me, but you never know. ...a christian could have like ... killed that potential employer's cat when he was little. :)

so yes i know where you're coming from.

I've thought about this stuff, too. I know that I'll be going back to school in a few years. Academia is just too alluring for me.

Jessie, yeah. When I do go back, it will be math-related.

ML, yeah... teaching is great, and I think I'd like to do it, but first I feel like I need to accomplish something.

That's why I am getting my PhD in CompSci and then I'll probably just go on to teach it. Being a code monkey makes me want to cringe too. It just isn't for me.

my thoughts exactly. working sucks. especially for the man.

Remember Justin Dunmyre? he was a tutor in the MAC, I think he was a teacher for one of your classes? He ended up getting his PhD in Math because his love for programming (his hobby) was tainted by working for the man. I couldn't understand why he would want to give up a fruitful profession for 6 more years of school and a questionably fruitless profession.

Now I understand.

I found your blog!! well actualyl all I did was click on your name...

I MUST agree with you that Pittsburgh PBS SUCKS... Before Andy and I had cable we used to watch QED a lot. Especially on Saturdays in winter when it seemed there was nothing to do. I enjoyed the pittsburgh culture stuff but none of the really good stuff was ever on. NATURE was really the best thing they had going for them. Where the heck was Nova? The podcasts would always advertise a program coming up on PBS and it would NEVER BE ON PITTSBURGH PBS... GRRRRRRR
